The Forgotten Workers

Fighting for the rights of domestic workers in America, plus other ‘forgotten’ segments of the economy. BBC reporter Jane Wakefield speaks to Ms. Ai-jen Poo, executive director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance in the US, at a TED Women event in California.
Ms. Poo explains how the fastest growing segment of the American economy is domestic help, especially with the explosion of the elder-care industry, and how women make up the overwhelming majority of workers in the sector. Unfortunately, they are also among the most exploited of employees in the country.
The report tells of the work that Ms. Poo has done on behalf of these workers, the new legislation she is pushing through the United States Congress, and what we as consumers can do to help protect these vulnerable individuals.
